- The the ancient seat of the kings of Northumbria, the castle dominaates the whole of the surrounding area. Also well worth a visit is St. Aidan's church and the Grace Darling museum. Magnisicent beaches - scenes from the film 'Becket' were shot here.
- Berwick on Tweed (10 mi)
- A medieval walled town with all mains facilities. Walk around the ramparts and admire its 3 bridges. Berwick is only 3 miles from the border with Scotland.

- A commercial tourist centre in north Northumberland, with plenty of recreational facilities. There are trips to the Farne islands with its colonies of seabirds and seals - or go to the Longstone lighthouse, famous for its association with Grace Darling and the rescue of the survivors of the SS Forfarshire.

- Wooler is a charming, traditional Northumbrian market town with pubs, cafes and interesting shops. Wooler is the gateway to the Cheviot hills and the Cheviot centre will provide visitors with useful information before venturing out to explore the hills and valleys. The Cheviots provided home for Iron Age communities dating back some 4000 years and some sites which may be visitied have been the focus of considerable archaeological interest in recent years.

Take the car or bike in any dirtection and you will find forest paths, hillside walks and seaside strolls within easy distance. St. Cuthberts Way passes close by and leads you all the way to Lindisfarne.

- On the main land or on the offshore Farne islands, there is plenbty to occupy the interests of lovers of wildlife. Take a trip to the Farnes from Seahouses and see the colonlies of puffins, gannets, seals and many other species.

- North Northumberland is brimful with castles and stately homes, whether ruins of times gone by or still in use today. Bamburgh, Alnwick, Dunstanburgh, Floors, Norham, Paxton and Manderston .... to mention but a few. There are so many you'll have to ration your visits to a realistic few!
